Nancy, how nice to hear from you at Baren Forum! It is a great place to get
feedback on specific printing problems. The encyclopedia is a wonderful
resource, too, don't forget to look there for answers and photo demos. The
$7 plastic barens are great to start, but you may need better, so check
Baren Mall, good tools will help a lot. I love my true baren, with a bamboo
sheath coil, but pretty pricey. The chord coil ones on baren mall may be
helpful. What are you printing with?

And Bridget, I was sorry not to have a chance to see you when I was in Santa
Cruz. I missed Andrea, as well, but things got a little crazy with all the
east coast distractions! I did see two of your wonderful woodcuts in
Bookshop Santa Cruz. And congratulations again on the Kala prize, which I
saw listed in their newsletter. I waved the day we drove up to Laguna, but I
think you were inside preparing for that open studio. Good luck to you and
Andrea with Open Studios this month. I told my mom to go in my stead!

hello to BARENERS-  this is relation to Marilynn's question
 on hand pain--other alternatives  that work for me
  are taking GINGER ROOT  capsules daily,and "stinging" my hands
 with the leaves of a stinging nettle plant  ,nettle ,rosemary and comfrey
teas all help  and an  easy to make drink to soothe aching muscles or joints
combine these ingredients and drink at least once and preferably thrice
daily
             1  TBS alfalfa powder
1 TBS unfiltered  honey
 1 TBS  cider vinegar
   8  OZ  water
   i have personally  tried all of these  herbal remedies with positive
results

  i find the new turn in the BAREN conversation  distressing  annoying and
downright uncalled for
do we not have a one post a day rule?
i believe making fun of anyone is wrong no matter how "evil" we perceive him
to be
i do not believe that the baren is the place for stupid jokes  everyone gets
enough of them already on their own emails  they have nothing to do with
woodcuts or the baren
re: the "joke " about turning  OBL into a woman etc  -this is offensive and
out of place- fellas--why not just begin to treat the woman in YOUR OWN life
alot better that you are  now     that has to become a positive
  jokes like this are- in themselves- offensive to all woman , all humans
please stop

i have been silent of late
my response to 9/11/01 has been to  identify  what i can do in my own life
to  help my community    to make an effort to put my self out a bit
  get out of the woods and the studio and  help
 some how
  figure out what MY contribution is...
...so--- i    start  teaching   drawing  in the local elementary school
'after school program' next thursday ,  i have five kids signed up  so far
i want to give them  an idea of how to see   to draw    then we will do
linocuts  in the next  six week session
  a pleasant side effect is that the school department has a federal grant
to create programs and "raise aspirations"   -the pay is $20/hr
  excellent for here

i have known that i am a teacher and healer   i have done both/  am trying
to learn how to do both

 this  incident of horror  did not surprise me    i am sorry to say
   in a society that makes  tv/ movies that are worse
   and  "watch violence" over and over
 then proceeds to become  numbed to violence --
 it was only surprising to me thatsomething like this
 did not happen sooner

i "lost my innonce" - as people are saying- we, as a country, have now done;
in the sixties when we had  one political assassination after another
and the vietnam war era      i have NEVER  felt safe on planes
 or in skyscrapers
  i do not "watch"   the events of 9/11/01 over and over   "glued to the tv
"  never !
  but   thoughts and dreams  do come

they are about  the need for  HEALING
the need for the world of humanbeings to embrace love
and start  helping each other
 instead of hurting each other


my FLORA print   is about healing  plants   just completed carving it
yesterday
 it is in linoleum this time
  i needed to carving something very soft
  in a world  that can seem very hard
i believe we can each help tremendously by simply doing good  where ever we
are

i am very grateful to have the BAREN connecting me to other  artists
the world over   light  love  peace art      gillyin  in machias  maine
earth

Subject: [Baren 15869] Off-topic subjects on Baren 

A gentle reminder, folks.....please stick to the topics of relief printmaking
(wide though it is) and leave the jokes for your private correspondence & private
reading. We have people on here from all over the world and from all kinds of
religious beliefs. What you perceive to be humorous, may not be humorous to them. 

Please save up your posts & combine into one post per day. Remember, we have many
expert printers on here - one person doesn't have the burden of answering *every* question.

I saw a bumper sticker a while back that seemed an excellent thought: "Think
globally, act locally" For myself, carving blocks is the best way of dealing with
many of my problems. Perhaps it is for many of you too. I foresee a flood of
wonderful, diverse art in the coming months!

I am using oil based pigments.  Have no problems wth heavier papers, dropping 
and working on lighter weight papers is harder with the drop.  The ink seems 
to take better on damp paper when press running  Guess I need to ptractice 
and experiment more. ots of good advice, thanks.  Also for the hand, this has 
been a problem for some years, even way back when I did a lot of calligraphy, 
onry thumb, hand area.

I am no expert here, but I think in overprinting...wether you are using
transparent pigments or opaque might make a huge difference. Of course, one
of the things I find so fascinating about hanga printmaking is this
traditional "overprinting" technique with transparent pigments to obtain
more color & gradations in a print with a minimum of blocks. Mastering the
design & creation of the "color" blocks for this purpose still
escapes...yet with time...there is still hope!

Other than Barb, Bea, Dan and Carol (did I leave anyone out ?) ...I have
not had many replies regarding articles for the October Barensuji
newsletter...it does not have to be a full blown article...tips, upcoming
events, past or current shows, etc... are all welcome.  Please send me
stuff off-list in text mode (no attachments! I already had one such email
with the title "Indian Paintbrush" addressed to newsletter@barenforum.org
that contained two exe virus files... no! I did not open them.)

Subject: [Baren 15872] prints and more prints 

Hi all,
The printmaking symposium is happening this month in Portland and wow, are
there ever a lot of prints up in the city. Every gallery and every college
and every alternative space has prints up. Does my heart good! I saw some 3'
x 5' woodblock monotprints, geometric patterns printed by hand. It must have
taken hours to print them! At least three colors on each one. I will go back
and try to get some pictures of them before the month is over, they were
done by Brian Shannon whom I know well, he teaches at two of the local art
schools. I went to see his opening on first Thursday so I could say I had
been there and was I glad....quite impressive. Actually all the work I have
seen is great.

Also the 20 year exhibit of all the members of the NW Print Council is in
the main commons gallery at Pacific NW College of Art and it was amazing,
the amount of printmaking talent! Everyone on this list that belongs to the
NWPC has work up. Before this month is over I want to try to see all the
shows, that will be quite an undertaking as there are at least 50 different
ones within a quick drive of the city center. I am in three that I know of,
so that in itself is impressive as I am not that well known......except in
my small circle. Waterstone, my own small gallery, invited everyone who has
ever been a member or guest artist to show their prints and several of the
gallery members who do other media struggled over to my studio and made some
prints....I think I have at least 3 or 4 converts.....they had so much fun
and the results were pretty immediate as I had them do monotypes. Hard to
make a mistake when someone who has been doing it 20 years helps you, so I
am happy to say they all turned out fairly well. At any rate we have 60
prints up in the small 700 sq ft gallery.

I will try to get some pictures up on the message board before the month is
over. Carolyn Staley is coming to the vendor fair and I am so looking
forward to seeing those real Japanese woodblock prints without glass and in
my hand......good thing I have no extra money or I might have to spend it at
this fair. Maybe I can borrow against future sales....hummmmm. More later as
I see more stuff.
