You know Maria, the natural fiberboard looks just like MDF [medium density
fiberboard] that I buy at the lumberyard. 1/2" thick and 4'by8' for about
$14.
You might save a couple of bucks.

on the matrix issue i like cherry wood and maple both as end grain and plank 
grain
the blank grain maple is so good at details i can fool wood engravers with a 
plank grain matrix ;-)..

i just descovered a new matrix material which i find very interesting and it 
is not even  a wood product.   CORIAN COUNTER TOP  IT ENGRAVES AS WELL AS 
BOXWOOD AND IS CHEAPER THAN MAPLE END GRAIN.

looking for an idea to engrave at 12" by 30"    just thinking?   a maple end 
grain block that size wouold break the bank.
