Is this archival? The Strathmore papers that I have examined for bookbinding were not archival and I did not want to use them, though they come in beautiful colors. Gayle W. Theme: none - Paper dimension: chu-ban size - 22 x 27 cm (8 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches)- vertical or horizontal orientation. Sign-up is of course open to any [Baren] member, but with one qualification: first crack at each exchange is given to members who did not participate in the one immediately preceding it. Once this 'early sign-up' period has passed, other members are free to join. One of the participants is selected as coordinator, and this person 'rides herd' on the group during the progress of the work, and also performs the very important task of doing the physical collation and distribution of the prints. Members send their finished edition to this person, and once all the prints are received, the coordinator collates them into sets, and returns them to the participants. > ------------------------------ From: "Gillyin Gatto" Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 11:49:07 -0800 Subject: [Baren 14073] deckled edges hello to all concerning the current discussion and Garth's question on deckled edges as an artist who is selling to the general (uninformed) public thru galleries that also carry other types of media i have to either mat or frame each piece so wether or not a print has a straight or deckled edge becomes a moot point noone ever even knows unless they remat or reframe the piece when i sell by mail is the only time the plain print all by itself rolled in a mailing tube with no wrapping goes out to a buyer. no one has ever said - gee i wish this had a deckled edge- and i rarely tear usually cut i realize that the traditional old fashioned galleries would keep prints loose in drawers as would print collectors these days especially out in the boondocks not many do that the one gallery that kept my prints that way -even tho they were matted- never sold a darned thing- cuz not many ever bothered to LOOK in those drawers! But then we DO need a sharp corner for the kento registration. Anyway, I wanted to send a brief report on my trip to Los Angeles. I had a fabulous time. Hiromi Paper is a great stop for anyone interested in learning about (and buying) washi. I gave a one hour talk on the papers I use for hanga and digital printing. About 20 folks showed up, including bareners Bea Gold and Ruth Leaf. There will be an article in the Hiromi newsletter. Really nice people, and very knowledgable. One thing I learned is that while our favorite, handmade 100% kozo papers must be surface sized after making, all the mold made and machine made Japanese papers are sized in the vat. I got some new ideas for printing papers too. Shiramine was the best cheap one. Then I gave a class at Josephine Press in Santa Monica, a treat. We started out with a three hour lecture/demo with a larger group. Our own Bobbie Mandel was able to attend that portion, great to meet her again after our brief introduction at SGC. John Greco was a real help, as a printmaker, he caught onto all my moku hanga information and helped point the way for the less experienced printmakers. All great people. One of them worked at the LA County Museum, and the next day gave me a short tour of the Max Palevsky collection of Japanese prints. Wonderful Utamaro women. Hokusai waterfalls, fabulous stuff. And my trip was topped off by a delightful visit to Bea Gold's hilltop garden. A pleasure to see her woodcuts displayed. Her studio seems much larger than it is because of her beautiful views. Thank you, Bea! We gossiped about baren-folk, but we only said nice things about all of you! ------------------------------ From: "john ryrie" Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 10:15:24 +1000 Subject: [Baren 14075] Snakes - ----- Original Message ----- \> Do I win the laggard award. > Le Green No my snakes will still take another month before their done. So I made the last ditch last Sunday. But I was very happy at what I learned from the effort...I am certainly a better printer for the demands of those 60plus prints. I didn't loose as many as I thought I might, the print is one solr etching plate relief rolled in a golden orange and four colors from a reductive woodcut.
