My first solo show!
I have been asked to have my first one-man show at the Jimmie B. Keel
Library Complex.
It is a brand new library with a 1000 sq. ft. gallery space, separate from
the actual library.
I am so hyped.
Oh well, back to work.

Have you tried the Siberian Birch?
It is NOT the same as Baltic..At All.
I use it and my tools never seem to suffer, I have had the same set for 11
years and use a Colorado dry ceramic stone on the (waterless, oilless) It
takes fine cut and you can use oil or water inks on it. Get a small sample
for Yuri and try it.

Baren Mall Masters,
The UPS truck couldn't make it up our snowy, icy driveway but the diligent
driver hiked up through the woods to deliver that precious order of Yamaguchi
paper.  I was pleased to see that the sizing (dosa) on this paper is a bit
lighter than what I received when my husband ordered for me.  I had
experienced some sticking when my paper was dampened, and although the color
application didn't seem to be effected, had to be very careful that the
sheets didn't stick together at the beginning.  I was wondering if you were
given a choice when the order was placed, as to the degree of sizing you
wanted ... and if so, what did you request?  (Is this a question for Dave?)
I think I was asked if I wanted heavy dosa or light, and had requested
something in the middle.

I still can't quite figure out the magic behind the Baren Mall, but thanks to
all those behind the scenes.

We just asked for 'normal, average' sizing, the same as what you got on
your previous paper order.  A couple of factors can affect sticking like
this.

Paper just freshly sized is more prone to this sticking than paper that
has been sitting around for a while. I'm not sure if that is a factor in
this case, because this paper is about as new as it can get!

If Misawa-san applied it a bit on the heavy side, then yes this could
also be a factor.

Another possible cause is putting a bit too much weight on top of the
stack after your initial wetting ...

Anyway, it's not usually a major problem. People here usually do paper
wetting in a two-stage process:

- - initial wetting (2 x 2) in a simple large stack.
- - a couple of hours later, after the water has basically penetrated
everywhere, restack the sheets in a staggered layout to let the paper
expand properly. This is the time when any stickiness comes up, and it
is a simple matter to carefully separate the sheets and lay them down
again. They will not stick again.

For those who have recently expressed interest in sharing more info about respective backgrounds, etc, you can always go to our "virtual bar", the Baren After 5, we've gotten onto all types of crazy topics there including discussion of Dave's new bathtub :)
I just got some nice news today, in addition to having a piece up in the "Animals in Art show" at LSU Veterinary School Library (they're also using one of my prints for the postcards & posters this year), one of my prints was selected for the "Works on Paper" show which will be in another gallery at LSU.  I know Pete walls lives in those parts, any other bareners live around there?  or have work up in these shows?  Always fun to get a "virtual report"-

Lynita, the image of the UPS guy hiking up through the snow to deliver your
Yamaguchi paper (in his shorts? they wear shorts year-round in Oregon!) is a
great one. As I recall, Dave ordered the sizing on the Yamaguchi paper.  Please
let us know what you think of the paper - or go to the mall & fill out a feedback
form. Or both! All of us working on this little project say "Thank you" to all of
you that have placed an order!

The mall seems to be a booming success, for it's vendors and for Baren & best of
all- for all of us budding hanga artists. Of course, most of the items in the
mall can be used for any kind of relief printmaking. These are really top-notch
items. If you haven't checked it out yet - be sure to do it soon.

I think I am most pleased with the sumi-in-a-jar stuff. [Although I have been
very pleased with everything I have ordered.] It is *so* black, black, black. And
I love doing black & white prints nearly as much as the color ones. I plan to do
my next black & white print with this stuff. Neri-zumi! That's what it is called.
You can find it in the Pigment Miscellaneous section of Matsumura-san's goods.

Subject: [Baren 13795] Mr. Kazuo Yamaguchi 

Has anyone heard or had any experiences with the latest batches of 
paper... past 6 month ...made by Kazuo Yamaguchi.
I have it from a Japanese printer, Masato Arikushi, in Vancouver that 
he has has some problems with the acceptance of colour and surface 
quality of the paper.  He is not happy.

I was about to order more paper but now I am concerned so thought 
maybe some Bareners may have feedback.
