But i just got a reply from Borders that the book is unavailable; why did they take my deposit in the first place. Anyhow, there is a copy i our National Library. I'll just go there and drool. ------------------------------ From: "Gillyin Gatto" Date: Thu, 08 Feb 2001 09:29:47 -0800 Subject: [Baren 13320] reference material /exchanges like Marilyn , i usually cant do someone else's idea either if it doesnt come out of my own heart and head i have no feeling for it however for this exchage ( my first) i had just happened to be thinking about doing a LYNX anyway, and it happens to be endangered - so it all works out i have seen a LYNX run across the road once but really i m not sure if it was a LYNX or a BOBCAT they go so fast -- so for Dan--concerning using photos etc as reference there is absolutely nothing wrong with it . wildlife artist friends of mine were taught in art school to begin their "morgue"-a file of reference pictures of every animal available--and keep adding to it constantly so while i have seen most of the animals i carve the length of time one gets to view them or photograph,or of even getting a goood photograph - varies tremendously - - when i told my friends i was going to do a LYNX they produced a fat folder of pictures of LYNX and BOBCAT for me to borrow and study i generally will spread a whole bunch of pictures out on the table and just live with and look at them for a number of days then i will draw my own composition on the block ,just using the pictures to reference different Parts if the body - to get them right .we have to look at something to draw it ,wether it is in our imagination or a photo ,it doesnt matter at all .... i hope you can let go of those old commands that were put on alot of us in public school---!DONT COPY!--which failed to teach us to SEE , and make use of what we saw.....Gillyin in machias maine usa ------------------------------ From: John and Jan Telfer Date: Thu, 8 Feb 01 22:58:22 -0000 Subject: [Baren 13321] Re: Display Boxes "Baren Digest" Our local Art Papers store has a very clever proprietor and she runs workshops for making display boxes ... I have my dragon postcards in one and snake postcards in another all in their wonderful envelopes they arrived in. There is a book called "Making Books by Hand - A Step-By-Step Guide" by Mary McCarthy and Philip Manna. Quarry Books, an imprint of Rockport Publishers, Inc, 33 Commercial St Gloucester, Massachusetts, 01930-5089 USA. Telephone (978) 282-9590 or Fax (978) 283-2742....ISBN 1-56496-675-5. Much closer to most of you than me in Australia!! On page 66 is an Artist's Portfolio Box, similar to those Dave gets made up for Baren. Cut it to the size you want .... perfect for postcard exchanges. I have made mine all A4 the size of photocopy paper to fit some of those overgrown snakes!! My favorite is www.bibliofind.com and I have bought several things through them. Gail Sheffield Covington, LA ------------------------------ From: "Jean Eger" Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2001 12:56:19 -0800 Subject: [Baren 13326] waiting for endangered species charset="iso-8859-1" Dan, It's my understanding that U.S. Government photos are not generally copyright protected, so are available to use as the basis for a woodcut. However, when you make a woodcut you are not going to make a slavish copy of a photo anyway, are you? What about adding your interpretation, your imagination, your technique, the animal's environment, his or her friends, children, other relatives, symbols, pattern, repetition. Also, we talk about our own "marks." They are our own individual knife cuts, like our own fingerprints. It is not like you reproduced that very same photo and signed your name to it, saying it was yours. Let's not get carried overboard with guilt feelings about other people's art work. You should ask Carol Lyons what happened to her: the city took her name off her work and reproduced it by the hundreds, sending it out as a Christmas card. She got a lawyer and took them to court and won a judgement for a lot of money. Anyway, when you make a print, it is backwards from the original photo. Well, I do take photos myself too. Then I don't have to think about that at all. I kind of like the idea of trying to find an endangered animal and WAITing for him to pose. A la the old Disney wildlife movies that we used to ahh and oohhh over. We should all be wildlife photographers as well as woodcutters! I just wanted to say I'm sorry about the delay in my prints. I was encouraged to document them so that took me some time considering it was my first time taking my own slides. Most of them will be in the mail Fri or Sat. Anything going overseas will be in the mail by Mon. Thank you for your patience. Pricey but if you want it, it is there. Here are two numbers: Eastern Office 1-800-328-1847 Western Office 1-800-233-2630 These are numbers for Impact Images and they will send you free samples of specific sizes and prices upon request. As a reference point their 16 1/4 x 20 !/4 are .26 each. They are acid free and crystal clear. We have been using these at one of the galleries I'm in and are very happy with them. On another subject: who was it who said words to the effect that "good artists borrow; great artists steal"? So, Dan - no need to suffer pangs of conscience in using reference material for your endangered critter. As long as you're not copying the photo verbatim, whats to worry? This group holds so much knowledge and shares it all so willingly. One thing too I noticed there is a lot of intergrity out there and if you people offer advice it is sound. So Dan seems the advice is to go ahead and use photos for your work, you will not jeopardize your integrity because you will put your personal stamp on it. I don't think any of us wants to plagerize, we want to create, Marilynn here in oregon ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest v14 #1313 *****************************
