Sounds like a drink. I have been cleaning my brayers with Corn oil, works great, and of course I will bet that between Barbara and I, we are paying for the new cars for the Viva towel co. Have been paranoid re; sending messages to the Baren after I sent all of those squares and circles. Hopefully, this will go through, if not then I guess you will not be hearing from me for awhile. Do not want anymore hate mail !!! I am putting all of my canceled wood blocks up on the wall in my studio bathroom. I think it will make a dramatic wall decor. They will be up there permanently, until the termites get wind of them. Garth, baby oil _always_ goes first, then Windex, then red wine to celebrate another successful clean-up (and keep all your food containers covered in the studio to prevent titanium white from entering your bloodstream). Seriously, I have tried vegetable oil and IMHO it leaves a greasier film than mineral oil (aka baby oil). Baby oil will not damage brayers, come'on! it's made for your baby's behind! Also, Windex has no ammonia, that is why I use that particular brand. Other glass cleaners do and they don't evaporate as quickly. I get a bottle of generic baby oil for $1.99 at your friendly Wal-Mart store, possibly one every two months or so; hardly a place to cut my expenses. You just don't need that much. Peanut oil? Hmmmm, now we're cooking! Peanut oil and honey aqua colors sounds like a great snack. I am going to mix chromium green oxide dry pigment powder with gum arabic and methylcellulose. How do I mix the gum arabic power and water? >> Jean-- I think you only need one or the other, not both. As several books say you can use commercial watercolors for water-base woodblock printing, you would probably be OK preparing your colors as watercolors. A formula in Ralph Mayer's handbook is: Gum arabic [acacia] 1 ounce distilled water 2 ounce pure glycerin 1/3 fluid ounce=a little over 2 tablespoons honey water 1:1 3/8 " " =2 1/4 teaspoons preservative 1/4 teaspoon The preservative is sodium orthophenyl phenate, looks like a 10 % solution. Pour boiling water over the gum arabic powder and let stand several hours. Methyllcellulose is dissolved in cold water, stand overnight. I think it would be used in the same proportions. The book says home-made watercolors are coarse and grainy compared to commercial ones which are very finely ground. As I remember, chromium oxide green is a very fine powder, so it should be OK. Garth ------------------------------ From: B E Mason Date: Thu, 01 Feb 2001 19:57:19 -0800 Subject: [Baren 13234] clean up Maria, Great web page. I have been using oil for a long time and it works very well. This is such a tidy studio, I am impressed. Guess I am just messy at heart.. I would be careful with inky paper, I usually put everything in an enclosed metal garbage can just to be on the safe side. If you want good clean up and less toxic materials you might also visit Nik Semenoff's site at http://duke.usask.ca/~semenoff he is a master lithographer who has developed many less toxic ways of working. I also learned from him at SGC last summer that you can mix etching ink with Windson Newton Artesian oil paint 1/2 and 1/2 (watersoluble)and you can clean it up with soap and water. So there you go. Sarah, congatulations on your show entry, we all need a little "acceptance" to keep us plugging along! Best to all ------------------------------ From: Gerald Soworka Date: Fri, 02 Feb 2001 16:45:36 +1100 Subject: [Baren 13236] Re: the baby oil idea Garth if you're allergic to petroleum products why not swap to vegetable oil. And Maria - baby oil is not designed to go on your baby's bottom. It is designed to make money out of waste products from the manufacture of petrol. It is not good for your skin or your baby's. Among other things it leaches vitamin E out of the skin. Rule of thumb: If you wouldn't eat it don't put it on your skin. To clean I wipe the plate with paper towel or cloth or run it throught the press a couple of times with newsprint. Then put a couple of drops of vegetable oil on the plate and wipe it over with clean paper towel. If I'm finished printing I use a bit of spray cleaner to remove most of the oil. And use a bit of talc on the rollers. Gerald ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest v14 #1305 *****************************
