Bea Gold Yes, ball-bearing barens will be available in the Baren Mall. Right now Dave is in the last stages of page-building, but actually the Baren Mall will not open until 2001 because the Mall Manager is tired and going on vacation :-) I'm taking the instructions from the website with me so I can make one while I'm out there in the cold. This mall will be a wonderful resource for woodblock printmakers indeed; it will have everything needed for the beginner to start out and also for the more advanced printmaker. More than that, I think, it is an incredible way to connect the tool and supply hand-crafter in Japan with the world woodblock printmaker. With that and a couple of books downloaded from the Encyclopedia, everyone will be able to do woodblock prints. Wow! Right now, I believe either Rembrandt or Renaissance or Graphic Chemical also has them ball bearing barens by the bounty (sorry, got carried away with the alliteration). After pasting the Hanshita down, you can oil it with vegetable, linseed, or whatever, and see the design through it. 2. If you are doubled up with stomach cramps after using laquer thinner, then you will know you have been poisoned by breathing laquer thinner. They say it is a carcinogen. I don't know if that had anything to do with the breast cancer I got subsequently, or if it was the huge dose of hormones the doctor gave me. At least use a breathing mask, called a respirator,and heavy blue gloves, outdoors. Or maybe it was my case of untreated lice and nits, growing fat and happy from the hormones. We get a lot of hormones in the meat we eat, also. My father used to say I was a nitwit, anyway. Thank goodness for the Red Cross class in childhood immunizations, or I might never have known what was going on. 3. Guerra sells them already dispersed in water, which is also better on your lungs than buying the powder (I think Kremer only sells powder). Anyway, I spoke to a salesperson at Guerra and they said they'd be happy to ship, their phone no is 212-529-0628 (sorry, no toll free number). Too bad you can't see your store, it's quite an experience. The colors are painted up on the wall each at strong, medium and light strengths so you can see how they look. They do have a catalog, but it would help if you also had the Wilcox Guide to Watercolor or some similar book, as the colors are referenced by pigment numbers, etc. as well as their names. At any rate, give them a call, the folks who work there can be a bit on the kooky side, but it's worth checking out. The pigment surely goes a long way. I mix 2 parts gum arabic/1 part glycerin, sort of winging it in proportion to the pigment. One of April's teachers had specific measurements for each color but that seemed a bit much! I also add a small dash of calcium carbonate if I want the color more opaque, then a bit of water depending on color, but that can be unnecessary if you're adding water on the woodblock as you print. happy printing! best wishes, sorry for the long post, Sarah ------------------------------ From: "Daniel L. Is there something better than Speedball cutters out there...can you sharpen Speedball cutters? Must you keep two sets of tools ...one set for cutting lino and one for cutting wood? I'd love to get some good lino tools besides the Speedball ones when I want to do a lino and I'd love to be able to sharpen, rather than having to keep buying those Speedball cutters. I've noticed that places like McClain's sell lino, but don't mention what to use for cutting....if the wood cutting tools would get wrecked by lino or what.
