Barbara: But if you have like 8 or 10 layers through the reductive method, do you still damp each paper that has dried ink on it, or you just dump it for the first time when there is no ink at all, thank you, Maria. ------------------------------ From: Julio.Rodriguez@walgreens.com Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 13:26:26 -0600 Subject: [Baren 12251] Re: Happy Birthday ! 11/27/2000 01:26:16 PM I am not sure who's bringing the cake and the goodies, but please cut me a big piece of that Baren cake............. This is a challenge, if you are doing reduction cutting you might want to print on dry paper. To keep damp paper the same size when printing over a long time, you would have to put it in the freezer or cut and print very fast! The freezer does work, but sometimes that is also a challenge, where to fine enough room for all that paper! If you dry it and rewet it, it will probably not be exactly the same size, so the freezer is the best option for leaving it for a day or two while you cut. I didn't get to see the tree because I got sick but also they cancelled because of the rain. I've been gone since on a drive of over 2000 miles to deliver furniture to my children! We are now over 260 members strong and have succeeded in many endeavors, including exchanges of prints among members and international exhibitions. Along with growth comes change and what used to be easily manageable by our founder and most illustrious promoter of woodblock printmaking, David Bull, is now impossible for a single person to undertake. Thus Dave dreamed up the Council, a bunch of movers and shakers who volunteered to coordinate exchanges and exhibitions and agreed to lend him a hand. A better and more inclusive exchange system was born, the Swap Shop was born, out of necessity for a more informal exchange system, Baren-Suji was born because Maria cannot keep her fingers still and her mouth shut... And now, because of David's need and desire to turn this forum over to the ownership of its membership, more changes are on the way. What better time to announce upcoming new and exciting events than on Baren's Third Birthday (November 27th!!!)? In a nutshell, meet the new and improved publicly owned BarenForum: - - We welcome Council member Bea Gold, who is a great source of reference and help for our new status, as well as a hard-working member (and a great cook). - - We are officially seeking non-profit organization status thanks to member Barbara Mason's skinny friend accountant, who volunteered to wade through the paperwork for us. Barbara will be the official Secretary, which is apparently the only official officer that we officially need so far. A huge advantage is that we will be able to generate income to fund our events. Another huge advantage is that we will be an official international printmaking organization and we will be able to take advantage of grants, donations, etc. More on this at a later date. - - For those of you that have been paying attention, we have a new website http://barenforum.org Looks the same, talks the same, your old links are automatically redirected there. Just a new name. Our volunteer temporary webmaster is member-in-the-bleachers David Bull. For those of you who haven't the slightest what in the blazes I've been talking about, I probably lost you in the first line of this email and apologize. Go to http://barenforum.org/information.html - - Wanda Robertson has volunteered to be our new forum moderator and she will be taking over that particular task as soon as nuts and bolts are arranged. The change is effective immediately. Applause for Wanda... - - John Amoss is our current archive worm, busily keeping for posterity the discussions in the forum. He is also responsible for Baren-Suji's masthead and the logos in the barenforum.org website. - - Coming your way early in 2001 will be an incredible resource for everyone with next year's opening of the [Baren] Mall. Inside the Mall you will find woodblock and woodcut supplies brought to you directly from vendors in Japan. The Mall will be managed by member Maria Arango, who will receive and forward orders to the vendors, acting as a storefront. BarenForum (that's us!) will keep a percentage of sales and we will use that revenue to fund exhibits and other activities and events. Stay tuned to your favorite forum to follow the progress. What stays the same? Everything! We are still the same happy bunch of people that we have always been. Membership will continue to be free and open to anyone who loves whittling a block of wood. The Council will continue to listen to your needs and rack our brains on how to continue to make things better for everyone. Exchanges and exhibitions will continue with much gratitude to the active members who continue to volunteer to coordinate such things. The Swap Shop will continue and awaits your prints. Members are especially welcomed and encouraged to contribute with their precious time and resources to any and all BarenForum activities. We hope that on this our 3rd Birthday you will join us in celebrating a stronger [BarenForum]. Our future looks brighter than ever and the possibilities are endless... Health to all, Maria PS We would like to invite those who are tempted to reply only to Dave personally about this announcement to please post to the list. One reason is that we value everyone's reactions and invite discussion; the other is that our Dave is neck deep in finishing his set of this year's prints, preparing for his annual exhibition coming up in January, and--oh yeah, moving to a new and exciting new house. http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~xs3d-bull/studio/images/building01.jpg <><><><><><><><><><><><> Maria Arango, Printmaker Las Vegas Nevada USA http://www.1000woodcuts.com maria@mariarango.com <><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ From: Arafat Alnaim Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 23:39:23 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Baren 12256] Rollers, Brayers and Wintergreen Is there any considerable difference between rollers and brayers?
