I'm very saddened by the death of Gorden Gilkey.  Although I've never met him 
his interest in my prints and his letters were very much appreciated.  I will

Back when we were working on Baren exchange #5 (Junin To Iro) I was working on
an image depicting the well known
indian story about the blind men and the elephant. I thought that this fable
about each blind man coming away with a totally different idea of what an
elephant was like really hit the heart of our theme. The unfinished carved block
of my interpretation hangs in my workroom as a reminder to be understanding of
others views.

With that in mind I like to share a part and a poem from that story that I think
serves us all well when dealing with the day-to-day struggle of making art and
having it accepted by others in an not alway friendly world....and I should
add....it could also I think be a model for forum tolerance here at Baren.......


"Just so are preachers and scholars holding various views blind and
unseeing....in their ignorance they are by nature quarrelsome, wrangling and
disputatious, each maintaining reality is thus and thus.....

O how they cling and wrangle, some who claim
For preacher and monk the honored name!
For, quarreling, each to his view they cling
Such folks see only one side of things."

Julio,
I taught that 5 Blind Man and the Elephant poem when I was a teacher and had 
the students illustrate it. It was an enjoyable and highly motivated 
experience.  Results were creative and of course humorous.

Is it possible for you to produce a woodblock for me? I have an idea of
promoting the woodblock printing. I plan to produce a leaflet which
will  be packed with the product. This leaflet will be a woodblock
print.

My plan is to help some poor people in western China by setting up a
small factory there. Hand make product is simple enough for them. As I
have explained, they can do some printing work to make some money.

The woodcut I need is very simple one, only text and only one color
print, probably black.
