Baren Digest Sunday, 15 October 2000 Volume 13 : Number 1180 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Legreenart@cs.com Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 11:39:20 EDT Subject: [Baren 11721] Re: acid in the house Baren Digest V13 #1179 Dear Jean, I would not want nitric without a vent system. Even with, mistakes are more than scary so I would never recommend it for the absent minded, or houses where children are allowed. After Christmas break at UT San Antonio, I was the first in the studio, anxious to bite a plate. I dropped it in the acid bath, and went off to prepare other things. Suddenly I heard what sounded like water that was rushing from a broken pipe. When I went to investigate, I found ugly yellow smoke and bubbles sizzling up from the plate in the acid bath. Over the break, in spite of the cover, the water had evaporated enough from the bath to create a very concentrated solution. It was pointed out that it could have exploded. On my next chet Xray one of the broncial tubes looked like it was scarred almost the length of my lungs. What are you talking about setting up a non-profit operation for? Perhaps you should set up your own listserve and not do it in someone else's name. When we have more info we will post it to the whole list and ask for help from everyone. I don't think we will be using Dave's name, Jean, but you were sweet to rush to his defense. Baren is becoming too large for one person to handle on a daily basis, it just takes to much time for one man, amazing though he is. Best to all and watch the main site for news in a few months. I am not going to use dangerous chemicals until I have been them demonstrated by someone who already knows how to do it without hurting himself or herself. I might be able to find someone in this area who knows how to do that. All this looking at the computer screen is beginning to affect my eyes. I am going to have to cut down on my computer usage. Or turn the brightness way down. Too bad, because I really enjoyed reading all the printmaking messages. Also in the drying side, my "water" prints dry almost instantly as the pigment penetrates into the already soften paper fibers....thus no strings to run or clothespins to use....just stack one print on top of the other as soon as they come off the woodblock.....the only precaution I take is perhaps to alternate top/bottom of print on the stack to prevent concentration of wet areas on the stack....also if a large color area is printed I will let it air out for the time it takes me to print the next two prints or so, before stacking it up.......usually a small plywood piece on top keeps everything nice and flat. By the way received you mail, thanks....if you still have a current one for last year I would like one of those....I don't think they were ready when you send me the original package....looking forward to this years exhibit by your group. Jean wrote: > Here is a communication that should be made public. ... and then sent us a 'clipping' about a Council discussion that is currently going on about the possibility of [Baren] registering as a non-profit organization. Yes indeed, such a discussion has been going on for some time now; ever since I learned that at the time of the Skokie exhibition Julio had invested more than his own _time_ in getting the show up and running. Julio never complained at all about the fact that he had spent money of his own on the show (and I know he will be dismayed that I even mention this now) but I myself felt that a [Baren] event such as that exhibition should _never_ result in personal loss for any particular member, so I started to search for a way to allow the group to be financially self-supporting. I think I may have come up with that method, and will be letting you all know about it just as soon as I can, but before [Baren] can properly handle a revenue stream, it must have a legal structure in place to handle it. This is why the Council is considering the establishment of a non-profit status for the group. (Sorry to seem to snub 'international' members here, but as the revenue would primarily come from US sources, it is US taxes that cause the greatest concern, so this non-profit status would be US-based.) It occurs to me that newer members of [Baren] may not know what the Council is - about a year ago, I asked five or six members if they would gather together to help me with aspects of the behind-the-scenes work that is necessary for the group's smooth operation, and they kindly consented to do so. Information on the make-up of the Council is on the [Baren] Information page at: http://woodblock.com/forum/information.html The discussions of the Council group work pretty much the same way as discussions in any such group, a local PTA, an Arts Festival organizing group, etc. etc. You know all about that sort of thing, I'm sure! In any large group like [Baren] (now 220+ members) there will be many who just sit on the sidelines and watch, some who participate in activities, and a few who want to help 'drive the bus'. So that's where things are at the moment. Jean, please don't worry about where the group is headed, as things are in very good hands and no changes to the basic structure of the forum (and the community that has grown up around it) are planned at all. Excuse me for the slow pace of these reorganizations; an immense amount of work is necessary for some of them to happen, and a lot of us are trying to make a living at the same time! And that prompts me to ask - if there are other potential 'bus drivers' out there (especially someone with direct experience of setting up a US non-profit organization), please feel free to write to me and offer to get involved. We have a long list of jobs waiting to be done ... Thanks for your understanding and patience ... You can etch it in a vertical tank (available thru Dan Smith & others), and I've found that I do not have to agitate it, I just take the plate out every 5 minutes, let the acid drain off, and re-submerge it. However, if you do choose to agitate, a small aquarium unit will do the job, tho I don't know how often they need too be replaced. I would strongly advise against using nitric acid in your home. With Keith Howards book you will be in business in no time, and it is possible to etch in a totally non-toxic environment using Green Drop Inks www.safeink.com Good luck, Sharri ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V13 #1180 *****************************
