As for locating a copy of Tomikichiro Tokuriki's book, I found one immediately just by checking with Abebook.com. I've ordered one for myself but there is a listing for at least one more. Also, as I'm about to try my hand at making my first woodblock, I was wondering about the suitability of black walnut for carving? I have 60 or 70 brd. ft. left over from a job and the lengths are too short for much else but would be just about right for some oban-sized blocks. I was considering bisquit-joining them together to a useable width and run the blocks through a planer to get a good uniform surface. Good ? Yes ,No? Finally, a month or so back someone complained about the dumb looks they got at the lumber yard when they asked for poplar or cherry or some other hardwood lumber. This is a little like ordering a split of Veuve-Cliquot at McDonald's.You'll get the same dumb look. You need to look in the yellow pages for "hardwoods" or "woodworkers supplies" and there should be listings for the specialty shops that will carry these sorts of woods. At the risk of Dave B also replying as I type (our last two posts were only an hour apart, touching on a similar topic... probably typed up at the same time - we might not need a computer if this continues, as it's happened before!) I see no problem with copying the Tokuriki book, for your own use but, even with copyright so blatantly ignored over here (where whole texts are multi-copied, especially in private English schools) I don't think it wise to make more. For reference, there were a couple of items on copyright way back in [Baren] 712/716. I will get on the line to the publishers though, as I'd like to know if they plan a reprint. The latest copy I have is Edition 10 from 1984. I used to give this book to non- Japanese buyers both for them to read on the plane home and also to let a wider audience know how woodblock prints are created as the text was, as said before, down-to-earth and easy to follow. I'll let you know how things turn out as, with modern technology, even a private editionÅ@is not beyond possibility. Print on... Well actually, we've already got exactly the structure in place for this, in our Encyclopedia. In the early verions the Outline had an entry for 'Marketing Prints', but I left it out in later versions because I knew that I wouldn't be able to get to it for some time. (I just put it back ...) >Any of our >business mentors could write one in, and if Baren members have comments or >questions, simply contact the contributor through personal e-mail, Well sure - if they _will_. I have to express some feeling of disappointment at how reticent people have generally been to join in the Encyclopedia project. I had originally thought that it would fill up very quickly with all kinds of entries, stories and articles from members of the group, but this hasn't turned out to be the case. Even the simple 'One-point' lessons on the forum are not drawing much response beyond a few much appreciated submissions by April and Matt. So I had kind of given up on the idea of getting people to produce written contributions of the type that are now being proposed for this business discussion. Instead, I suggested that it be handled through 'discussion group' methods, a method that we know seems to work well ... (and how!) But I don't want to be negative - the 'blank pages' in the Encyclopedia are ready and waiting (and they're free!). I would like nothing more than to receive a bunch of submissions from Bill, Dave Stones, Ray, ... whoever. I'll have them uploaded into the 'Business Considerations' section before you can blink!, and the discussions can go from there. I can't promise fame and fortune, but should let you know that the Encyclopedia is getting hundreds of page requests even on slow days. Just last night the entire thing was 'sucked' again by robots for indexing in some search engine. Every page of that thing is now repeatedly indexed all over the globe. If you're thinking that it's not worth taking your time to sit down and write out some of your thoughts and ideas to share with people (on whatever aspect of printmaking, not just this 'business' topic), then I think you're missing out ... Gentlemen, start your typewriter engines! Dave (B.) ------------------------------ End of Baren Digest V4 #277 ***************************
